Philip Schmidt-Madsen

In June 2011 Philip Schmidt-Madsen, as the first Dane for 19 years, won 1st prize at The International Carl Nielsen Organ Competition, and was also awarded the "Commotio Prize" for the best interpretation of Carl Nielsen’s organ work Commotio. He regularly cooperates with a large number of choirs and orchestras at home and abroad – both as an organ soloist and as an orchestral musician. Together with the singers Hetna and Steffen Bruun, he regularly tours with Trio Bruun. Philip is at present employed as choirmaster for the girls’ choir Sankt Annæ Pigekor.

Biography

Philip Schmidt-Madsen was born in 1982. After studying at The Royal Danish Academy of Music, where his teacher was Professor Bine Bryndorf, he became a Diploma Graduate in 2007. He subsequently studied under Professor Hans Davidsson, KMD Rudolf Kelber and Martin Böcker at the Hochschule für Künsten, Bremen, where he completed the German church music A Examination in 2009. Since autumn 2010, Philip Schmidt-Madsen has studied in the soloist class at The Royal Danish Academy of Music under Professor Hans Fagius.

Philip is actively involved in concerts both in Denmark and Europe. He regularly cooperates with a large number of choirs and orchestras at home and abroad – both as an organ soloist and as an orchestral musician. Together with the singers Hetna and Steffen Bruun, he regularly tours with Trio Bruun. Philip is at present employed as choirmaster for the girls’ choir Sankt Annæ Pigekor.

Scholarship from the Léonie Sonning Music Foundation

The scholarship is to be used for teaching in improvisation in Stockholm and Paris, further training as a choir conductor, commissioning of new organ music for a debut concert in autumn 2013, and for the recording and issuing of a CD with Danish organ music by Carl Nielsen and Rued Langgaard.
